What scares employees?

Gutiérrez relentlessly rushed the task that had just been assigned to him at the last minute, just when he had an hour left to go home. He had the job he had always dreamed of but had been disillusioned and frightened for some time by a presence he felt every morning in his office. A shiver down his spine, a giant shadow that was reflected in the anguished faces of his companions. An entity that was always present but never seen. Gutiérrez goes to bed thinking about his work and gets up with very little desire to go to work. Truly terrifying.

Surely you would not be surprised at all to discover that Gutiérrez's efficiency leaves much to be desired. He has motives, right?

When productivity starts to plummet, we can't always figure out why. Is it a time management problem? Procrastination? Not up to the task?
We all have self-induced fears regarding our job, perhaps due to perfectionism or a lack of self-confidence. But the ones that really affect our productivity are those that do not depend only on us.

What are those things that scare employees?

  • Not learning: Seniors, millennials, baby boomers, or Gen Xers, we all want to grow. Continuous training is essential to be able to cover new tasks, perform better in the usual ones and feel useful.
  • Poor relationship with coworkers: A distracted and irritable employee will show a lack of interest in work. It is inevitable that certain personal issues interfere with our work, there are times when it is difficult to handle bad relationships but we should not be afraid to communicate it and seek a solution to improve the environment.
  • Stagnation: the fact of not going back but not moving forward can become a huge wall for our motivation and our ambitions.
  • Absence of emotional intelligence: A workforce without emotional intelligence is a mess. Emotional intelligence should not be confused with certain personality traits such as being pleasant, optimistic, or calm. Identifying and managing our own emotions and those of others is essential. People with high emotional intelligence can solve a variety of problems related to emotions accurately and quickly.
  • Miscommunication: Miscommunication in the workplace can lead to poor employee relations and a hostile work environment, In general, that makes inefficient workers. This, of course, rubs off on customers.
  • Exclusively negative feedback: receiving feedback is the best thing that can happen to us to be better at our work, but what happens if our superiors are they only addressing us to highlight our mistakes?
  • Do not delegate: Fearless bosses are those who can delegate. Super bosses live to learn and invent, push the organization to constant innovation and allow employees to work independently.
  • When there are bosses, not leaders: Just as employees want to absorb as much knowledge as possible, a good leader must accept that they can learn from their template. Employees expect their leaders to provide them with a direction or focus in which to focus their work. If the people at the helm have poor leadership skills, the possibility of miscommunication is high. Incompetent leaders exhibit indecisiveness or excessive control and fail to inspire confidence in their subordinates, sometimes they also make the mistake of not treating the people on their team equally and, almost always, they often lack good communication with their employees. They may also be unable to answer questions posed by employees, leaving subordinates in the dark about what to do.

Gutiérrez's life can be very attractive on a day like today when we celebrate Halloween with costumes, candy and playing with the scary morbidity. But the rest of the year there are many Gutiérrez, Fernández, Pérez... who are really tormented by the fact of having to go to work and find bad faces, a new anger from the boss or end the workday without the opportunity to ascent.

These are very frequent problems that fortunately have a solution when a company cares about promoting a good working environment, has a culture based on values (and is consistent with them), when the company judges the work of its employees in a transparent and fair manner and, above all, when it achieves establish transversal communication channels that favor professional development.
