Return-to-work Interview
When we talk about a return-to-work interview, we refer to the conversation held with an employee after returning to work following a period of absence, especially in cases of medical leave, temporary disability, or prolonged absence.
Its main objective is to facilitate the employee’s return to the workplace, understand how the absence has been experienced, and ensure that the person returns under appropriate conditions. In Human Resources, this interview is considered part of good employee follow-up and wellbeing practices.
What is a return-to-work interview used for?
A return-to-work interview should not be understood as a control process, but rather as a support and guidance tool.
It allows organizations to:
- Support a gradual return to work.
- Detect adaptation or adjustment needs.
- Identify possible physical or emotional difficulties.
- Strengthen communication between the employee and the organization.
- Reduce the risk of future absences.
Some of the aspects typically addressed during this interview include:
- How the employee feels after returning from leave.
- Whether temporary support or adjustments are needed.
- Changes that occurred during the employee’s absence.
- Current workload status or phased return arrangements.
- Possible concerns related to returning to work.
