This is a statistical indicator that is used as an index of the income situation of women in relation to that of men. It is calculated by dividing the average annual income of women by the average annual income of men and is expressed as a percentage.

Although paying a woman less than a man for the same job and under the same conditions is illegal and is classified as a crime, in Spain women earn 28.6% less than men and it would take around 105 years to close this gap.

This indicator is also used to compare the income of other races and ethnicities with that of white men, since this is a group that is not generally subject to discrimination. In the United States, the Law of Equal Pay was signed into law in 1963, yet African American women earn 64 cents for every dollar white men earn, and Hispanic women earn only 56 cents on the dollar.
