Basing decision-making on objective data is essential in the field of Human Resources. The histogram, over time, has become a key tool for properly interpreting the information available to us.

A histogram is a type of bar chart that represents the distribution of a quantitative variable. Unlike a traditional bar chart, a histogram groups data into intervals (also called “ranges” or “classes”) and shows how many values fall within each of them.

In other words, it allows us to visualize how data are distributed and detect patterns such as concentrations, dispersion, asymmetries, or outliers.

Applied in talent management environments, the histogram is especially useful for:

  • Analyzing the distribution of performance evaluation scores.
  • Visualizing results from engagement or workplace climate surveys.
  • Observing salary dispersion within a team or department.
  • Detecting concentrations of potential in 9-Box evaluation processes.
  • Analyzing competency levels in assessment processes.

Beyond simply showing figures, it helps answer questions such as: Is most of the team concentrated at high or mid levels? Is the distribution balanced or polarized? Are there signs of evaluation inflation?

How it works:

  • Horizontal axis (X): value intervals (for example, score ranges from 0 to 10).
  • Vertical axis (Y): frequency, that is, the number of people or cases within each interval.
  • Adjacent bars: with no space between them, as they represent continuous data.

For example, if we analyze a performance evaluation with scores from 1 to 5, the histogram could group the results into intervals such as:

  • 1–2
  • 2–3
  • 3–4
  • 4–5

Each bar indicates how many people fall within each range. With the histogram, we can:

  • Detect biases in evaluations.
  • Analyze consistency among managers.
  • Identify development needs.
  • Evaluate the impact of a compensation policy.
  • Measure performance evaluation results across campaigns.

This allows us to transform a list of numbers into a clear view of the organization’s collective behavior and make more informed decisions.
