Positive feedback
Positive feedback focuses on the strengths, talents and achievements of an employee or a team. In this way, team members are informed about what they are doing well and what they should continue doing, fostering improvement and creating a positive culture of open communication.
From a people management perspective, positive feedback acts as a key tool to reinforce desired behaviours within the organization. It is not only about recognising results, but also about reinforcing behaviours, attitudes and ways of working that contribute to collective performance. When this type of feedback is systematically integrated into team dynamics, it fosters a higher level of psychological safety, where people feel more confident to propose, innovate and take on responsibility.
Developing employees’ strengths through positive feedback is a much more effective approach than focusing attention on weaknesses. The organizational psychologist Dr. Marcial Losada found that in high-performing teams the ratio of positive to negative comments was around 6 to 1. In addition, positive feedback stimulates the production of oxytocin, the happiness hormone in the brain.
The influence of positive feedback
Many studies have verified the effectiveness of feedback in aspects such as teaching or sports. Also in the business sphere, both with our customers and with our employees, feedback -especially positive feedback- has a motivating and implicating power that we should not miss out on.
Tips for effective Feedback
The difference between giving feedback and giving effective feedback makes all the difference in successful organizations. Taking care of every detail in the feedback will make your team always open to receive and give feedback, and to have a healthy and trusting culture.
